The Samsung D550 (Series 5) provides awesome bang for buck. If you can live without the Smart TV apps of the later Series 6 and 8 TVs, you'll get the same picture quality from this set at an amazing price. Pros: - Picture Quality is supurb. Black blacks, as expected from modern mid range plasmas. - A BIG SCREEN - All the ports you could need - Great 3D experience - great menu/interface - Extensive support for multiple media types & video codecs (when played directly from USB stick or over your network) - Energy efficiency Cons: - The screen lacks an anti-gloss coating, so it is super reflective. Choose this set carefully if you intend to use it in a room with large windows/sunlight. (This is typical of plasmas as they have glass screens, compared to LCD/LED that use plastic. High end plasmas will have an anti-gloss coating). - The screen has a quiet hum/buzz when no signal is being recieved by the TV. No problem for me though. - This series of Samsung set uses infra red to determine the auto-brightness and contrast levels for your room- both a PQ and an energy feature. However, constantly blasting your room with IR could interfere with your other component remotes- such as Foxtel IQ. Moving Foxtel from under the TV will help this, as will a piece of celotape colored black with texta and placed over the Foxtel's STU IR eye. I've written more about the Cons than the Pros, but seriously this set is utterly wonderful. Highly recommended.
