PVRs (Personal Video Recorders) are a must-have for any entertainment system, and Big Brown Box provides the latest models from leading brands such as Humax, LG, Panasonic, Sony and Samsung.

Check out our range to find out how you can enjoy cutting-edge convenience and functionality - you'll never miss your favourite show again.

The possibilities are incredible. You'll discover massive storage capacities, the chance to record a favourite show while enjoying simultaneous playback of another, intelligent capabilities to record a whole season's worth of programming, and so much more.

We offer optional extended warranties on our PVRs and free delivery is also available.

Why buy a PVR?

A PVR's primary benefit is being able to record and store large amounts of TV content, giving you the convenience to watch what you want, when you want.

As such, they are a bit like the old VCR recorders, but their capabilities are more sophisticated. The difference is the incorporated Hard Drive in the PVR. Content is stored here digitally.

That's a huge convenience.

For a start: no more tapes. It also means you can playback even when you're still recording, store hundreds of hours of content and record multiple programs simultaneously. And PVRs also improve the quality of the recording - with a lot of newer models able to support HD signals.

Can I also record to disc with the Blu-ray and DVD PVRs?

There are currently three broad choices that Big Brown Box offers. You can choose a PVR with an integrated Blu-ray player, DVD player ... or you can choose a stand-alone model which just incorporates a hard drive.

All DVD PVRs can record content to disc (i.e. DVD) as well as the hard drive.

However, only select Blu-ray PVRs can record to disc. Panasonic is the only brand currently in Australia offering a PVR which can record to Blu-ray disc ... and of their PVRs, only the DMR-BWT700 and DMR-BWT800 have this capability. The DMR-PWT500 can only record to Hard Drive.

Aside from recording - how will a PVR enhance my viewing?

PVR technology is developing all the time. For instance, internet connectivity is becoming a huge trend. For instance, you can position your PVR at the centre of your home network and feed a wealth of online content through to your TV - meanwhile sharing pictures, music, videos and more via compatible network devices.

Select models also let you manage your PVR remotely. Humax PVRs are particularly cool in this regard - users can subscribe to IceTV, an online facility allowing them to organise their recordings from portable mobile devices (minimum subscription fees apply).

And... any good reason why a PVR isn't for me?

Well, many TVs available at Big Brown Box feature something called "USB extendable PVR". This means the TV is capable of recording to an external media device, such as a USB stick or Hard Drive.

This is, of course, a somewhat limited option - you will not get any of the additional functions that a PVR can deliver, such as the internet connectivity. Since TVs don't incorporate twin tuners, you will also lose the option to record multiple sources at the same time.
