Making "the Switch" to Digital T.V.
Most consumers will now be familiar with the term ‘Digital TV’. Some will be worried that it is going to cost them quite a bit in new hardware. Some probably don’t understand the benefits or why the transition from analogue is being made. The purpose of this will be to explain the difference between analogue and digital television, and outline the benefits.
The differences between analogue and digital television
At the moment the broadcast spectrum – the ‘area’ available to broadcast sound and vision – is quite full because digital and analogue signals are being broadcast concurrently. Between 2010 and 2013 analogue will be phased out, and digital will become the sole format.
What are the differences between the two?
- Analogue works by encoding sound and vision in an analogue signal.
- Digital works by sending out sound and vision in discrete digital signals.
- Digital can carry more information than analogue.
- Greater choice for viewers in terms of channels and programs being broadcast.
- Digital is the new global standard.
- It should also be noted that digital quality both in terms of sound and vision is far superior
From a consumer’s point of view there are two main options if you want to enjoy the benefits of digital – you can buy a digital ready television or you can buy a ‘set top box’.
